New Guardians poster is the definition of gonzo space opera

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 director James Gunn has, perhaps, the best reaction to his film's latest poster:

A post shared by James Gunn (@jamesgunn) on

Nailed it. Between the poses, the colors, and the subject matter this here art is the embodiment of what wild & woooly, gonzo space opera from the Decade of Excess is all about.

Here's a nice super-sized version to hang in your bedroom, kids. Click to view the high-res, Ego-size!

TRAILER: Latest Guardians preview now with Kurt Russell!

It's a tad spoilery, so don't click if you don't want to know anything. Really though, just watch it!

TRAILER: Doctor Strange brings magic to the Marvel Universe

For years--the better part of this decade--I've been DYING to see how Marvel would add the arcane elements of the Sorcerer Supreme to their cinematic universe. Doses of the scienc-y "magic" were dropped with the Thor movies and the Guardians of the Galaxy. The Avengers films had a pinch of that old Kirby Krackle, as well.

Strange even had a passing mention as a possible "threat" by SHIELD (we all know how that went!) In Captain America: Winter Soldier. The set up has been a loooong time coming.

And he's not just one of my favorites--he's long been one of Stan the Man's favorite characters.I was psyched way back in 2009 when Stan Lee said Strange was on Marvel Studios' radar to be made. I'm cannot properly communicate my elation at it finally happening!

By the look of this trailer Doctor Strange is gonna be serving up the MAIN COURSE! Finally we're going to experience the full-on comic book wonder that Marvel is famous for. I suppose instead of the Krackle, we'll be getting some "Ditko Dazzle!"

By the Eye of Agamotto, behold the psychedelic visions of Dr. Stephen Strange in this origin-focused teaser! Enjoy!

Doctor Strange hits US theaters November 4, 2016

TRAILER: Some real chemistry going on in Fantastic Four

Somehow they snuck this one in over the weekend, amidst all the Star Wars and Bats v. Capes trailers out there. This looks much improved over the previous trailer that really didn't seem too connected to the famous quartet.

This new trailer though has some real spark to it--and while I won't say it makes me think of the comics, the characters seem to have something driving them, other than scenery this time. Maybe going younger with the main characters wasn't such a bad idea after all.

We get a glimpse of their powers, the Thing in full rocky-regalia, and finally a peek at Dr. Doom!

TRAILER: This is how you do ANT-MAN right!

Whatever your impression of Ant-Man was from the first trailer, let it go. Because this one is MUCH more thrilling--and hilarious--than its predecessor.

Ant-Man stars Paul Rudd, Michael Douglass, Evangeline Lily, and that guy from House of Cards. Opens July 17.

Here's Ant-Man running endlessly in circles with his pals, enjoy!

Guardians of the Galaxy take over SNSO on Free Comic Book Day!

Well look at that--the very next Saturday Night Space Opera lands smack dab on FREE COMIC BOOK DAY! John and I have chatted many times about what we think the perfect game would be for that day and the answer has always come up:

...because obviously. But Mr Till is also a fan of the old Guardians--the ones before Star-Lord and his merry bunch of a-holes. So we're throwing these guys in too:

...and then we thought why get some Avengers on board, plenty of them have fought along side the Guardians at one time or another. And of course a dozen or X-men who've been in space. And who could forget the Fantastic Four--who BEGAN their adventures in space.

When you think of it, who really hasn't been a part of the Marvel Cosmic Universe?

So come FCBD, there's gonna be an all-out space brawl at the Source Comics and Games! It also seemed totally obvious that in the spirit of all things from the 80s, we should be playing the TSR version of Marvel Superheroes. That's right, FASERIP BABY!

Bring on the totally tubular colored charts!
Speaking of the Source, co-owner Bob has been mega supportive of us playing that night. He's a righteous dude and we're super grateful to him for letting us be a part of the celebration at the Source!

One final thing, to attend you gotta RSVP on the SNSO CONTACT page. Include some contact info (email or phone) so we can confirm your seat prior to the event and ensure we have enough GMs. It's gonna be BYO 2d10 and pre-gens galore will be available to choose from.

Starts at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 2
Source Comics + Games

 SEE YOU KNOWHERE!

TEASER TRAILER: Avengers: Age of Ultron hits early!

If you watched Agents of SHIELD last night, you saw a quick mention about the teaser trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron, which was to air with next week's episode. And then the trailer leaked today.

Marvel, being savvy to a good thing when they see it, released this official HD version this evening. Hopefully, they'll seize on next week's SHIELD as an opportunity to show even more. The film's U.S. debut--in all it's Hulkbusting glory--is May 1, 2015.

Enjoy!

Comics Pull List Revised!

For the last few months, I've been whittling my pull list down and now I've only got two titles.

One hasn't even started yet, the new Silver Surfer by Dan Slott and artist Mike Allred. It looks like Allred is the perfect fit to illustrate this character! I loved his take on FF (somtimes called "Fantastic Faux"), which were basically replacements for the Fantastic Four. I still love that series, but stopped picking up individual issues and opted for the trade pub version, mostly to save some scratch, but I also prefer reading complete storylines in big books. I'll miss those individual covers though!

Allred's art has a carefree, joyously colorful look to it that I just relish. And judging by the cover, it'll be the kinda' fun that the surfer should be having.

The other is a title I've blogged about previously, and the first issue didn't disappoint--Rick Remender's return to space-fi in Black Science! It's dripping with the cool, unmerciful and cosmic setting you're used to finding in an H.P. Lovecraft tale, but with a little gonzo/wa-hoo in the mix.

I'm technically also signed up for The Star Wars, that "rough script" version of George Lucas' original screenplay for the eponymous film. The art is really fantastic. The story is just okay. The actual layout--how the story fits together panel-by-panel--is terrible. So much so that I basically bought the last issue in my pull file out of guilt, which makes me feel terrible. If it didn't have "Star Wars" on the cover you'd think it was just a poor imitator not worth reading.
