Jean Girard "Moebius" 1938 - 2012

Wow, not even a week after losing Ralph McQuarrie and another sci-fi artist is gone. Jean Henri Gaston Giraud "Moebius" was an icon in the comics industry. By all accounts, he was likely one of--if not the most celebrated comic illustrator(s) in a commercial sense as well as artistic influence.

If you've seen (and loved) Blade Runner, Tron, Alien, The Fifth Element, not to mention the animated films of Rene Laloux (Les Maîtres du temps and Gandahar), then you've been witness to the collaborations with filmmakers. Perhaps the partnership for which he'll always be associated is the one with filmmaker, comic book writer Alejandro Jodoworsky. Their most famous comic book collaboration was The Incal, oft-cited as a science fiction masterpiece, it's set in a massively overpopulated future and touches on themes of high-technology, religion, and commentary (satire mostly).

Last fall on a trip to Madison, WI, my wife and I stopped in a tiny comic shop on Monroe Street and I picked up a hardbound collected edition--their last copy of a sold out print run. I splurged and it quickly became one of my most prized tomes. (Feel free to mention your favorite Moebius work in the comments.)

The other project, which has become somewhat of a legendary "what if it had been made?" status is Jodoworsky's Dune film. Moebius, along with other great artists like H.R Giger, rendered some of the most unique and breathtaking concept illustrations. Had it been realized on film in the scale and scope Jodoworsky intended the film might have changed the course of modern science fiction, as it was to release before Star Wars. When the film fell apart, Moebius went on to do concept work for handful of other films (The Empire Stikes Back and Alien included).

Though his vision was in a state of irreversible decline the last few years, he was still working. I'm still trying to figure out a way to process it, because--and I say this without irony or hyperbole--there are two periods in the world arena of comics: with Moebius, and without.

And sadly, we're now living in the Post-Moebius Era.

My Trip to Barsoom (John Carter mini review)

Okay, just got back from seeing John Carter and....I loved it. Seriously, it's been a while since I've had that "great movie" afterglow leaving the theater. The visuals are so striking and the ending was masterfully rendered to a satisfying conclusion--even though it's set up to obviously continue.

I'd like to answer a few questions about some elements that have been on the minds of geeks who are both die-hard Burroughs' fans and/or indifferent and think it's Prince of Persia 2.

Hopefully, there's a message here, too, for anyone who's "meh" or "no way" about seeing it. GO. Give it a chance. It's better than any of the commercials give it credit for and it's well worth $10.50--more so than most other action films I've seen recently. It's a popcorn chomping, brawl of movie--with some brilliant character and story touches.

If this is enough for you and you don't need any further build up to go see it, then by all means, stop reading right now.

If you're still skeptical and don't care to have a little bit spoiled (and don't mind a bit of cheerleading!) then continue. Now, on to the questions....

Was it faithful to the book, A Princess of Mars or the other John Carter books?
When it needed to be yes. As a film, the story was great, and all the changes that Andrew Stanton and Michael Chabon made were improvements. I can say that, without reservation. Some of the relationships between some key Thark tribe members are different from the book but the alterations serve the characters quite well indeed. Personally, I'm not someone who believes films should be on-screen translations of their source material. I think they should live and breathe on their own.

So if you wanted a literal translation from the book...well...just shut-up and give it a shot anyway. If you love the book, the filmmakers give you plenty of "nods" in the dialogue to ease any agony.

How were John Carter and Dejah Thoris?
Tim Riggins--er, Taylor Kitsch was good. He was (I surmise) hired for his brooding looks and barbarian-like physique. He was serviceable in the role. The one missive was a lack of cool Southern gentility that's woven into his literary counterpart. Other than that, he slices and dices bad guys quite well.

Dejah was another matter entirely. I REALLY like what they did with her character. She had a better reason for being in the story than the MacGuffin mentioned in the book's title. Dejah's a role model for young girl in intellect, athleticism, and heart. This is due in large part to the talent of Lynn Collins, who in many ways, lifts the entire film. Often times, a poorly cast heroine can seem shrill and disengaging. Collins is the opposite, and enhances every interaction in which her character appears. Dejah could have easily been the film's kryptonite, but Collins (and Stanton, by design) have made her the film's heart.

How about the Tharks? Believable?

Tars Tarkas, Sola, Tal Hajus, Sarkoja, et. al. were each wonderfully realized in both on-screen presence and in their respective story lines. There's no Jar Jar moment in any of their articulation on screen. Sarkoja and Tal play their parts as plot devices, a sacrifice well worth the added mileage we get out of Tars' and Sola's stories--again to the benefit of the film. The biggest disappointment is that Disney decided not to market any freakin' action figures for what's possibly the most expensive film they've made yet. So I'm denied the joy of having an army of Tharks on my desk at work to intimidate my coworkers. THIS IS A TRAVESTY. Moving on...

How was the art direction/environment, etc.? I remember the first trailer looked too much like Utah!
This is without a doubt Barsoom. It's an alien world all right--with a hint of similarity to Earth to make it believable that it's our neighbor and not a planet from Star Wars. In each setting, be it wilderness, ruins, airships, or urban--there's a distinct, exotic and believable sensation. Any fears about it not being so, are completely unfounded.

What about the film's faults? You're just a big ol' Pollyanna!
Fair enough. The film does have flaws--it's not a bat-out-of-the-park hit. But I'll be seeing it again and getting the DVD. There's really nothing else on this scale that looks as good. I'll concede that there are some weak spots, but the best parts shine bright enough to dispel any shade.

High points include: Carter's arrival on Mars, meeting Woola, a completely all-out barbaric battle featuring Carter in the middle of the film, and the last 10 minutes of the film. These were more than enough to win over my very reluctant wife, who admitted she was thinking of bailing before we ventured out to the show. In the end, what really got her on board was the same thing that gets all naysayers.

It's the thing no grouch can resist--that steal every show and stills the eye-rolls of many a jaded film-goer. It was....

...the dog. :)

Notable cameo to watch for:
Brian Cranston of Breaking Bad fame appears as Powell (literary Carter's mining partner) but in the film he's more of a foil.

Again, if you were thinking of skipping it, or waiting, I encourage you to go see it in theaters. See it as a matinee or a weekday. If enough people go, we might even have a shot at seeing where Stanton and company take the story next! As Disney fare goes it's far above what they usually deliver, and frankly far better than what they deserve, considering how they botched the marketing. If you're looking for a rollicking, interplanetary adventure then gas up the thoat and just go see it already!

Thark Thursday: Tars Tarkas

Hey friends, it's John Carter Eve! If there's such a thing...which there is, I just made it official. It's still technically Thursday, so I wanted to a few pics of Tars up (click to embiggen). I've got another special art post planned as well, but it will have to wait until I can get the scanner working again (soon though). Until then, I give you the big guy himself...

The early reviews are starting to come in for John Carter, so far they're looking pretty good. It looks like it hits the right notes--namely, those of a certain pulp fashion (emphasis mine, below). From Hitwire:

The good news is that Andrew Stanton, one of the cornerstones of Pixar and the director of both "Finding Nemo" and "WALL-E," has made a nimble jump to live-action, and much of his movie is imbued with a wild, thrilling pulp energy and a genuine sense of wonder. It is a charming science-fiction adventure that makes no apologies for what it is. This is the sort of film where there is talk of Jeddaks and Tharks and Barsoom and you're supposed to just pick it up and understand, and where we accept that Mars doesn't look a thing like modern science tells us it does because that's the conceit. It will be interesting to see who gets hung up on the difference between reality and this film's conception of Mars, because there's nothing about this that plays as "real," but there is such a strong sense of voice that I think Stanton sells the reality beautifully.

I think the review does an excellent job of giving the film the proper context--that of an old-fashioned Saturday matinee-style adventure. The writer had some minor quibbles (mainly with buying Taylor Kitsch as a Civil War vet), but was largely positive and ends on a high note:

"John Carter" may be hobbled by one of the worst marketing campaigns in recent memory, but in that way, it is the opposite of many of Disney's latest event films. I thought they did a great job selling both "TRON: Legacy" and "Alice In Wonderland," but I hated the movies themselves. This time, I think they've fumbled the sales pitch completely, but if you're willing to look past that and go the theater, "John Carter" is transporting in exactly the way I want my escapism to be. Richly imagined, robustly performed, and directed with the evident enthusiasm of someone who's been dreaming about Barsoom his whole life, "John Carter" is a gem.

As of this writing, the film has a 74% freshness on Rotten Tomatoes, which is downright terrific for an action movie.

Ralph McQuarrie, 1929 - 2012

This one hurts. I first found out last night when my wife was up late reading the news online. There have been several artists in the last few years that we've lost, but I can't think of one more influential to my own juvenile imaginings that Ralph McQuarrie. Yes, he was the inspiration behind the look and feel of Star Wars (and many other films). Yes, he influenced an entire generation of artists and filmmakers. But for me, it was much more basic and visceral.

When I was a kid, I didn't have any clue that someone actually drew Star Wars before it "happened". I had no idea what a concept artists even was. I remember seeing a painting (below) and thinking "That's not Star Wars! It's like Star Wars, but somehow 'off' a bit." How wrong I was--it was the essence of everything George Lucas was trying to achieve. It sold 20th Century Fox on his ideas, and it propelled production by serving as the blueprint for Industrial Light and Magic's efforts to bring the script to life.

But one thing was certain, his work was electrifying. And it ignited my imagination so much that for a time I was a McQuarrie junkie, hunting down his work wherever I could find it. This in turn led me to learning about filmmaking, which eventually became part of my area of study in college.

I owe a great deal to his work, in part because it was one of the earliest lessons I learned about creativity--that every idea comes from somewhere and there are a million directions every idea can take. I still look at his work and can think of a different backstory for every character, starship, or planet. That's the real power of art--to move the viewer's imagination as much as the person who created it.

Thank you Mr. McQuarrie, for all the feverish, nerd dreams you've inspired. And with every illustration, painting, and sketch--making feel like a kid again. You will truly be missed.

21 Alternate Outcomes: An Excercise

Just playing around on a Friday with some alternate history ideas. I tried to do this within a certain amount of constraint, owing to some self-imposed rules:

1.) Must be based in historical context (not further into our own future)
2.) Did my best to shy from stuff I've already seen/heard (just tried to avoid the obvious, i.e., "What if the Germans had The Bomb instead of the US?")
3.) Shouldn't be inherently fantastical (i.e., What if we'd discovered alien footprints on the moon in 1969?) but there is some leeway.

The intent of course is that these would seed some alternate-universe inspiration that would at least border on, if not embrace, a sci-fi outcome. Have a look and feel free to add yours in the comments or blog your own list:

What if NASA had decided robotics were not a reliable enought tool for exploration? Imagine a different method our outcome.
What if the Superconducting Super Collider in Waxahachie, Texas had been as well funded/supported as the Mahnattan Project and the US was leading the way in particle physics reasearch?
What if Dolly the sheep had ushered in an era of cloning tech that was fast, cheap, and accessible to the middle class by 2012?
What if the Manhattan Project split into two initiatives after 1945 to win the arms and space races simultaneously by the mid-1950s. Imagine where national defense and space exploration would have taken us by now.
What if Saudia Arabia had dumped the profits from oil wealth into space and undersea exploration?
What if China had become the world's largest democracy, instead of India?
What if Arabian advancements in science and engineering had never slowed during the Middle Ages, but ramped up to lead the world in technology?
What if both Venus and Earth had been hospitable--and home to--humans into the present. When would we have disovered, and how would we have influenced one another?
What if whales and dolphins were the end-stage of human evolution?
What if the human population on Earth hadn't been slowed by Black Plague--or any plague really?
What if the ruling Empire of the last 4 centuries was from Africa, and not Europe?
What if filmmaking had been around since the Renaissance?
What if World Wars I and II had been fought in Antarctica to avoid spoiling homelands?
What if Britain had owed a war debt to France and sold the Colonies (east of the Louisiana territory) to pay it off.
What if fossil fuels had run out 50 years ago?
What if spiritualism in the 19th Century had been confirmed as real and led to the biggest scientific breakthroughs of the 20th? (Technically runs afoul of rule #3, but whatevs.)
What if the Knights Templar were still around today as the world's most prestigious and capable humanitarian fighting force?
What if Native Americans had discovered and employed gunpowder long before it's ubiquitousness in Europe and Asia?
What if flight technology had been around since Ancient Egypt--and never been a lost?
What if all communicable diseases had been erradicated by 1950?
What if Tesla--not Edison--had become the technology guru of his time? What if they'd been amicable partners?

Thark Thursday: Joe Jusko covers

I'm a big fan of Dynamite Entertainment's various Warlord of Mars titles. Among my favorite cover artists is Joe Jusko, who has done some amazing pieces on a number of variant issues. There's really two reasons I love his work. The first being that each piece does an excellent job at conveying a story in the covers. This is made even more apparent when you look at how some of Dynamite's other covers have focused on, ahem, "other" aspects and have actually led to endangering their ability to publish Burroughs' stories. So I really do appreciate that the cheescake factor isn't the primary focus (I could write a seriously long rant about how much I hate that).

Jusko's are quite the opposite, actually. When it comes to composition, both within the scene as a whole, and the figure of each character, he's got incredible technical skill. One of my favorite covers is this one of Dejah before a Thark Jeddak who's posed as if he truly is one physique built on top of another. It made me do a double-take the first time I saw it. The Thark anatomy and posture appears totally natural the way one set of limbs casually rests on top of the other, and is still articulating a dynamic posture.

Jusko is master of the posed "hero shot" covers like with issue #1 of Warlord of Mars (above), and equally--if not better--at putting characters into fantastic and believable action scenes...

This last one below is great just for shear muscle-bound barbarism. It's a great action cover and I love the lavish colors.

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that Jusko's style is indicative of certain era during which I grew up (the 80s!) and had a huge influence on my view of fantasy and sci-fi artwork. At least if seems that way to me. It just "feels" like a hearty, swashbuckling-good time...on another planet!

Oh yeah, an actually talented writer wrote John Carter!

So io9 has a new interview with John Carter writer Michael Chabon. With all the hub-bub about Disney-is-flubbing-the-marketing and it's-too-darn-expensive there's one glaring fact that people have lost: this movie is made by awesomely talented creatives. Andrew Stanton made two of the most successful Pixar films and Michael Chabon is a superb storyteller in his own right, telling personal stories in a variety of sci-fi settings.

There's been quite a bit written about how John Carter will be "just like Avatar" or Dancing With Wolves, essentially becoming a retread of itself (since those and many other stories have borrowed from the Barsoom tales) all while cries from purists have said it won't do justice to its creator's work

So how about a peek at what they're goals for the film have actually been:

If anything, Chabon and Stanton wanted to show John Carter as a catalyst, who allows the Martians to liberate themselves. "Dejah Thoris and Tars Tarkis are already seeking change. They are already actively working for change, and the appearance of Carter is a catalyst that makes it possible for the Martian characters to continue to act on their own behalf... It is not so much, hopefully, that he's the savior or that he knows things they don't know."

And they were keen to show that Mars saves Carter, even more than Carter saves Mars. Carter is a "lost soul" who is clueless, and just wants to get home to Earth. But when the Martians see what he can do — including his ability to jump really high, in the weak Martian gravity, they're keen to enlist him on their behalf. It's not so much that Carter sees the Martians are doing it all wrong — instead, we see the caginess and "opportunism" of the Martians, who seize on him as a tool for their liberation.

It sounds like they had a tough job, trying to balance the Burroughs voice with something that would be compelling for modern audiences. It also sounds like it's not just a dressed up, B-grade special effects flick.

It's sounding like a movie that I'd really enjoy. I suppose we'll know for sure in a little over a week.

Thark Thursday: Bronze Age Miniatures

Thought it'd be nice to see some sculptural interpretations of our favorite four-armed friends. Lead sculptor David Soderquist at Bronze Age Miniatures has crafted some mightily impressive Barsoomians (or their nearest stand-ins as they're called "wasteland mutants" on the site). These are among, if not the, best Thark minis I've come across.

I own a few of these myself and they're just wonderful. They stand taller than normal minis being cast in 32mm scale--don't ask me if that's true to the source material, I'm not a good enough judge of that. But I can say that your average 25-28mm is going to look pretty shrimpy next to these dudes.

Finally, a trailer that makes sense, builds anticipation, and looks fantastic.

And it was cut by a fan over at the John Carter Files. I really wish this was the way it was first presented, but what's done is done.

P.S. Let's just nip the negative attitude with hyperbolic press in the bud while we're at it too. I suppose this is the most press the film has garnered to date though. Can't we be excited about something momentous, just once?

Watery Exoplanet Discovered!

Hubble Telescope scientists are reporting the discovery of a new class of expolanet--a water world. Planet GJ1214b is larger than Earth but smaller than Uranus (tee hee!) and orbits a red dwarf star. From Hubblesite.org:

They found the spectrum of GJ1214b to be featureless over a wide range of wavelengths, or colors. The atmospheric model most consistent with the Hubble data is a dense atmosphere of water vapor.

"The Hubble measurements really tip the balance in favor of a steamy atmosphere," Berta said.

Since the planet's mass and size are known, astronomers can calculate the density, of only about 2 grams per cubic centimeter. Water has a density of 1 gram per cubic centimeter, while Earth's average density is 5.5 grams per cubic centimeter. This suggests that GJ1214b has much more water than Earth does, and much less rock.

As a result, the internal structure of GJ1214b would be an extraordinarily different world than our world.

"The high temperatures and high pressures would form exotic materials like 'hot ice' or 'superfluid water,' substances that are completely alien to our everyday experience," Berta said.

Theorists expect that GJ1214b formed farther out from its star, where water ice was plentiful, and migrated inward early in the system's history. In the process, it would have passed through the star's habitable zone, where surface temperatures would be similar to Earth's. How long it lingered there is unknown.

GJ1214b is located in the direction of the constellation Ophiuchus, and just 40 light-years from Earth. Therefore, it's a prime candidate for study by the planned James Webb Space Telescope.

So a few important items to note here beyond the facts and figures.

1: At first glance it appears that the intense atmospheric pressure could be hostile to most life on Earth, but if you recall, we've found microbes, worms, and other simple organisms thriving in heat vents on the ocean floor, so anything is possible.

2: Hubble is still a relevent and extraordinary piece of equipment for finding planets--and not just an instrument for deep space only missions. It's a shame that its life expectancy won't be lengthened, but it's nice to know that the exoplanet work carried out by the James Webb Telescope can earmark GJ1214b for future study.

Working on my first adventure...

So I've decided to put together an adventure module for X-plorers. I have a kernel of a "cool idea" but it's turning out to be tougher than I imagined. Here's a quick, high-level glance at what I've got so far:

New alien species? yes
Weird technology? yup
Strange alien environment? affirmative
Initial hook? yessiree
Chapter hooks? Possibly...
Artwork? Not yet (though I've been working off some inspiring pieces but I'll need some created at some point)

It's the melding of all these elements together that's kind of bogging me down a the moment. Frankly, part of this is that I'm stuck, spinning my wheels at the moment. So some sage advice (even if I've heard/read it before) would be motivating right about now.

With a dungeon enviroment, it would be simpler--just cordon off areas and drop in the baddies. But sci-fi kinda needs a bit more of a push. So does anyone have a favorite sandbox module or adventure resource that they like as far as structure goes? Layout suggestions would be a bit premature at this point.

Right now I'm looking for a good solid format for the info itself (organizing descriptions, stats, etc.).

Thoughts?

Thark Thursday: Michael Whelan

Illustrator Michael Whelan's renderings are the first impressions I had of the Tharks and their gangly, four-armed physiologies. It's my opinion that the cover of A Princess of Mars (above) did justice to their physical description more than some of the steroid-induced and hulking versions we see in comics today. Whelan's Tharks are tall and slim but still muscular.

At the same time, this portrayl is almost jarring to me after having read it--since the Tharks appear to be more sniveling and weak. While an arguement can be made that this is showing them at their weakest--when John Carter has asserted his military prowess and Mars-enhanced strength over them, the scene doesn't do much to illustrate their reputations as mighty warlords. From that perspective it's perplexing why the scene was chosen.

Still, it's an awesome painting!

Later renderings depicted mainly Tars Tarkas in a buddy role--and even as a third wheel. At least we got to see Whelan's Thark in a more adventerous posture.

This last piece is a character study (Tars?) and shows off some of the more alien features of the Tharkian face. The displaced eye socket in the top version makes them appear more like a preying mantis and it's a feature that I wished had stuck in the final renderings. Perhaps the eye was kept forward to humanize the Tharks a bit more with the assumption that "more alien" = enemy and "more human" = ally.

Man, I must be slipping, I just heard about this--the classic sci-fi TV series Space 1999 is getting a reboot by the same outfit that revised "V". io9 has a Q&A interview with one of the producers, here's an excerpt:

What fun aspect of the original show are you most excited to feature in Space: 2099?
The near future plausibility of it all. Space: 1999 presented a very near future societal depiction where a moonbase had been established, and the show worked to successfully convince us that it was a reasonable vision to have given where the world was in the 70s. In a similar but much more emphasized vein, one of the key elements in our depiction will be as much plausibility as possible. Since we are dealing with a future timeframe of only around 80 years, there will still be plenty of familiar things around – however evolved they happen to be. It is this kind of projected iteration and future evolution that can be fun to depict as well as very thought-provoking. We consciously understand that a future projection must be comprehensive and not just focus on technology. Corporations, governments, social issues and day to day concerns all must be considered. No one was worried about their Facebook wall activity 80 years ago! My, how things change! It is exciting to imagine the various extrapolations from now until 2099.

It also looks like, judging by the poster, that the Eagle ships are making a comeback! Here's hoping there's a toy line in--oh, I don't know--1:72 scale?

Okay, I have no idea what this dude's real name is, but in just a few strokes of a sharpie marker he's rendered some really inspired illustrations of our favorite green martians. I particularly love how the eye defines the shape of the head--gives a good alien-from-another-world feel. And while that's not the first time I've seen a Helium-style helmet on a Thark, the overall effect with the roundish head is magnificent.

Great work on the physique too--quite believable compared to others I've seen that come off a little forced. Getting those extra arms in there can be tough!

SPACE NAZIS! Official Iron Sky Trailer

Holy S#!t this looks amazing! It's incredible to think this is NOT a Hollywood film, but an independently produced feature from Finnish filmmakers. In case you haven't heard of it, or just want a refresher, here's the synopisis:

NAZIS ON THE MOON!

...oh, the official synopsis:

In the last moments of World War II, a secret Nazi space program evaded destruction by fleeing to the Dark Side of the Moon. During 70 years of utter secrecy, the Nazis construct a gigantic space fortress with a massive armada of flying saucers.

When American astronaut James Washington (Christopher Kirby) puts down his Lunar Lander a bit too close to the secret Nazi base, the Moon Führer (Udo Kier) decides the glorious moment of retaking the Earth has arrived sooner than expected. Washington claims the mission is just a publicity stunt for the President of the United States (Stephanie Paul), but what else could the man be but a scout for the imminent attack by Earth forces? The Fourth Reich must act!

Two Nazi officers, ruthless Klaus Adler (Götz Otto) and idealistic Renate Richter (Julia Dietze), travel to Earth to prepare the invasion. In the end when the Moon Nazi UFO armada darkens the skies, ready to strike at the unprepared Earth, every man, woman and nation alike, must re-evaluate their priorities.

The fact that German character actor Udo Kier makes an appearance is a stroke of sheer genius--on his part and the filmmakers'.

The film opens sometime this April.

I seem to recall, circa 2009, this clip surfaced with word that an independently produced film about Buck was in the works.

Here's a scene that was apparently shot for the film:

I remember James at Grognardia had done a post about it. When I went to the offical website, which is run by the rights holders (The Dille Family Trust) there's nary a word about it. The uploader of the video has zilch as well.

Anyone else recall this or have info?

New Featured Gallery: Wally Wood

When I was researching the Space Ranger class for X-plorers, there were three pieces of art that inspired me. Wallace "Wally" Allan Wood's cover for the February issue of Incredible Science Fiction (above) was the first, and most iconic. His view of the sci-fi "spaceman" was dashing all right, but Wood would not be content with the caped swashbuckler that was made popular with Flash Gordon. He brought us the buckle-strapped, bubble-helmeted astronaut adventurers we've come to know by heart. This was "hard" sci-fi in the 1950s, grounded in a more realistic aesthetic than the preceding operatic golden age of space fantasy.

His spacecraft was shiny, but held together with rivets. The insides were twisted greeblings of be-hosed control panels, exposed wiring, walls of dials, and mechanical tissue so highly detailed it was a near blueprint for the coming space age. He may have rendered his visions in comic books, but he might was well have been slaving over a NASA drafting table. Wood's work help define the very template for how we view the astronaut-as-hero archetype in popular art.

His work spanned much further than sci-fi, venturing into fantasy with titles like Valor and The Wizard King, superheroes with Thunder Agents, as well as a slew of children's comics and adult humor books.

New palette and score for first sci-fi epic "A Trip to the Moon"

Cinema pioneer and silver screen sorcerer George Méliès and his science fiction wonder Le Voyage dans la lune (A Trip to the Moon) has been getting a lot of attention of late. Most recently, Méliès is portrayed by Sir Ben Kingsley in the Oscar nominated film Hugo by Martin Scorsese and so the real-life man and his work is having somewhat of a re-introduction to the world.

If you've not seen the Hugo, do make a point to go while it's still in theaters. Scorsese and Kingsley have crafted a beautiful love letter to early cinema and to the artist. I'm a movie nerd at heart, and while I've seen some of his films, it was a real thrill to see Méliès' imaginings and his movie-making secrets lavishly illustrated on the big screen.

More than a century after the film's 1902 debut, French electronica band Air, was asked to compose a score for a restored version of "Trip". The orignal was colorized (hand-tinted) by Méliès before the advent of color film. Black and white copies were easier and cheaper to make and over the years, the color versions were all thought to be lost. But a color print eventually was discovered. From The Guardian:

But that celebrated image was always black and white, as the colour version of the film was thought to be lost for ever until an anonymous collector handed a copy to the Filmoteca de Catalunya in Barcelona in the early 1990s. It was in such a poor state that it took eight years to restore before it was ready to be unveiled in public. Air only became aware of the rediscovered print when they were asked to create the soundtrack. "The first we heard of it was when they asked us to do it, because it was lost, destroyed. Nobody alive had seen it in colour," says Godin. "It was something that only a few specialists knew existed."

There was no original soundtrack, as films were silent. If there had been, Air say they would not have touched it. "If there was an original score, it would be horrible to make new music and destroy a piece of art," says Godin. "I would hate it if someone did that to one of my records. When a piece of art is done, it's done. But the fact that there was no original score was too good an opportunity to miss."

The full article goes into greater detail and I agree with their assessment, that the new music and brightened visuals lend a psychedelic quality to the story--and reveal a whole new depth of appreciation for the film's characters and design.

It's worth noting how remarkable the changes are in contrast to a black and white version of the film:

Above: An Apollo-era design. Oh hey, you should also check out this awesome blog called Beyond Apollo, which is ALL about concepts and ideas from the golden age of American spaceflight. I was impressed enough to add it to my blogroll. :) Really wonderful stuff!

Below: On cusp of the shuttle-era NASA was working on this "spider" space station that recycles a spent tank for crew housing.

A 1977 concept drawing for a space station. Known as the "spider" concept, this station was designed to use Space Shuttle hardware. A solar array was to be unwound from the exhausted main fuel tank. The structure could then be formed and assembled in one operation. The main engine tank would then be used as a space operations control center, a Shuttle astronaut crew habitat, and a space operations focal point for missions to the Moon and Mars.

Very cool to see them working on not just the main orbiter vehicle but an entire playset--er, family of spacecraft for the then fledgling program.

I'd die for a print of this incredible painting by Greg Broadmore of Weta (the visual effects wizards who animated the new Tintin film). I'm already ga-ga over his Dr. Grordbort's line of ray guns and other steampunky works (books, posters, etc.). And since there's talk of a sequel, this gives me huge hope that it might actually appear in a follow-up on the big screen.

This illustration is an homage to a panel from Explorers on the Moon, 17th in the Tin Tin series, and featured in The Art of the Adventures of Tintin.

BTW, saw Tintin last Friday and LOVED it. Apparently others did too--it took home a Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature, Sunday night.

Seeing this has me thinking that it might be time for me to work up some space vehicle posts!

John Carter's cancelled trip to Mars

Before Andrew Stanton took over in 2010, there is a long list of directors, writers, and filmmakers who, at one time or another, had their hands on the slippery reigns that belonged to Barsoom's cinematic rendering. The list itself is a virtual who's who of Hollywood directors and includes Robert Rodriguez, John Favreau (in the last 10 years) but extends back further to aborted attempts with John McTiernan (Die Hard) casting Tom Cruise as Carter. Ray Harryhausen was at one time attached (would have loved to see that one) and we all know already about the first try, which well may have resulted in the first animated feature being an otherworldly epic including 6-limbed green aliens, rather than a fairy story with 7 dimunutive miners and a narcoleptic brunette. ;)

One such attempt included Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow director Kerry Conran, hired to step in for Rodriguez. Conran was asked to present his vision of John Carter's saga and this video is the result:

The video is rich with beautiful concept images, borrowed orchestral scores, and sword fight test footage with a CG Thark!

NASA: 100+ Billion Planets in the Milky Way

NASA has conducted a recent survey of our home galaxy and through the sheer power of statistics, came up with this astonishing find:

The survey results show that our galaxy contains, on average, a minimum of one planet for every star. This means that it’s likely there are a minimum of 1,500 planets within just 50 light-years of Earth.

The study is based on observations taken over six years by the PLANET (Probing Lensing Anomalies NETwork) collaboration, using a technique called microlensing to survey the galaxy for planets. In this technique, one star acts like a magnifying lens to brighten the light from a background star. If planets are orbiting the foreground star, the background star's light will further brighten, revealing the presence of a planet that is otherwise too faint to be seen.

The study also concludes that there are far more Earth-sized planets than bloated Jupiter-sized worlds. A rough estimate from this survey would point to the existence of more than 10 billion terrestrial planets across our galaxy.

They seem to be on to something--three more smaller-than-Earth-sized exoplanets were just discovered.

All of this comes on the heels of last month's discovery of Kepler22-b, hypothosized to be the first habitable planet outside our own solar system.

And the 100 billion+ discovery STILL does't count the billion+ rogue planets thought to be out there as well.

It's such an exciting moment for science and the whole human race. I'm really, profoundly moved just to be hearing news like this. Take a moment and think about this pale blue dot we live on and it's true place in the universe, and sheer promise of what lies out there waiting for us to discover.

The Milky Way study will appear in tomorrow's issue of Nature.

Space Rangers in the Movies: Planet of Storms

While I working on a few upcoming gallery posts of space rangers, I stumbled upon this awesome find. It's a 1962 Russian sci-fi EPIC called Planeta Bur a.k.a. Planet of the Storms. Directed by Soviet Era filmmaker Pavel Klushantsev, it features some seriously slick production values in the way of costumes and vehicle designs, but is probably best remembered for it's Robby look-alike "John the Robot". Wikipedia says the costume had over 42-points of articulation, which I'm pretty sure outdoes Robby by about 40 points. [snark!]

Here, our intrepid explorers are beset upon by human-sized Godzillas:

In the future, a Soviet-American expedition to Venus encounters problems upon landing and must be rescued by a companion ship already in orbit around the planet. The cosmonauts must overcome adversity and challenges using their courage, skills and technology.

Ray Gun Inspiration: "The Atomic Auditor"

If I had my way, I'd commission an entire armory filled with these babies to be the model for the "Atomic Auditor" carried by every Space Ranger.

Here's a small selection of what I'd consider to be "variations on a theme", namely snub nosed, silvery, and wide barreled or flared at the end. Many of them are custom props--the one above is a 3D render by Deviant Artist Polperdelmar and among my very favorites.

Space Ranger Standard Issue: Equipment & Vehicle Requisitions (Part 3)

The Space Ranger Corps. is magnificently proud of its elite personnel who exemplify cunning, hardiness, and bravery in the face of overwhelming cosmic peril. However, there is one final attribute vital to a Ranger's success in the field: being prepared. As a member of the enforcement branch of Central Space Command (CSC) and a duly-deputized officer of interstellar justice, the responsibility for being well equipped for any and all eventualities rests solidly on your shoulders.

It's true, you will rarely have the upper hand when confronted with extraterrestrial terror, but the CSC has worked hard to properly train and outfit Rangers for nearly every eventuality. As such, you will begin your career with the following tools as standard issue to help get the job done!

The following post covers personal gear and equipment for every beginning Space Ranger as well as some upgrades. Basic spacecraft available to Rangers in the field are also covered.

NOTE: This post is part a series of Space Ranger class posts. It assumes familiarity with the X-plorers science fiction role-playing game rules, which can be found at Brave Halfling.

Standard Equipment
All Space Rangers have the following beginning equipment requisitioned to them at no cost. Additional mission module packs for planetary survival, rations, etc. will be assigned prior to mission.

Body suit and skull cap (temperature controlling fabric) -2 damage to heat and cold
Space pressurization suit (includes re-breather system, padded gloves
Space helmet with retractable shielding, solar visor, and personal communications radio
Heavy-duty, planetary encounter footwear with retractable cleats (+1 move over ice and rock surfaces) and mag-lock for hull-side excursions
Wrist-mounted controller/chronometer/mission recorder module
Laser pistol sidearm "Atomic Auditor" class, includes holster and 4 power clips (10 blasts each)
Space Ranger badge (encoded with Ranger's DNA and unique CSC badge number, used universally as ID)
Mission harness with mini power supply
Jet pack (requires mission vest to power and hook up)
12 inch jungle knife, calf holster

Additional Equipment and Gear Upgrades
Rangers can purchase additional items a 20% discount which will be deducted from their CSC pay. In extreme cases, the Referee/GM may deem their use mission critical at no cost.

Weapons

Laser rifle (with or without bayonet) comes with shoulder brace, carrying strap, and scope with +1 accuracy bonus; a sniper tripod also is available adding an additional +1 for accuracy
Plasma grenade belt (holds 6)
Zookatube (shoulder mounted energy weapon)
Shock-lance (2 meter, electrified lance that delivers up to ten 100k volt shocks for stunning or shoots five 50k volt blasts up to 20 meters)
Single clip wrist blaster (laser blasts; up to 30 per clip; or 4 mini rockets per clip)
Liquid nitrogen spray canister (10 meter range, stream or cone nozzle)
Don't forget additional ammunition for any of the above

Rangers specializing in any of the above weapons receive an additional 10% discount on their weapon of choice. (Base costs determined by Referee/GM. Some items may already be covered in X-plorers rules in case you need a place to start.)

Jetpacks can be used for in-atmosphere or orbital excursions. Don't be like these jokers--wear a helmet for Buck's sake!

Additional Gear and Upgrades

Utility belt with 6 power clips for pistol ammo
Vibro spurs for beast riding (extra 10% discount Rangers with Beast Riding skill)
Wrist con upgrades including remote pilot controls; grapnel/climbing attachments; sensors pack for geologic, particle, and climate readings; and aforementioned wrist blaster)
Helmet upgrades, macro binocular sensor, microscope setting, parabolic reconnaissance scope, armor class upgrade (see space suit upgrades)

2 nacelles boosters for sublight travel
Medium grade shields/armor
Basic short range (within 1 AU) and long range (40 AU) sensors
No greater than 30 meters stem to stern
.5 metric ton cargo capacity to include space for mission gear/supplies and arms; space cannot be converted into housing for additional upgrades; powered bay doors are included
Firing magnetic clamp on 100 meter winch for loading/towing
2 life support hoses for EVA service, 20 meters each

Upgrades include:

A.I. ship control
Reinforced hull plating
Sensor blurring hull coating (enemy sensors suffer -3)
Additional weapons including gun turret with gun station (note: requires crew other than pilot who cannot operate simultaneously)
Upgraded sensors (deep space, launch probes, etc.)
Tractor beam (up to 300 meter range)
Additional cargo pods (configuration is up to player or ref) up to 2.0 metric tons
Speed/propulsion upgrade for sublight and/or atmospheric travel (1 additional move per nacelle, up to 3 additional nacelles)
Escape capsule (serves 2)

Sadly Commander Kirk failed to realize Officer Rhett Shird's seat was on the OPPOSITE side of the escape capsule--face down in the snow.

Any additional upgrades constitute a larger ship class and should therefore be handled as a mission requisition or separate spacecraft assignment by the Referee. Crew capacity and cargo capacity are capped for these purposes. Additional mission vehicles, such as moonwagons or other planetary excursion conveyances will be assigned prior to mission assignment (by the Referee).

NOTES:

Referees should feel free to supplement equipment upgrades with recovered/reconditioned space junk and fine goods purchased through Galactic Outfitters. CSC discounts may or may not apply.
Referees should also feel empowered to withhold any item from a cadet deemed unprepared to handle said equipment.

Train to Become a Space Ranger!
The Rangers are a multi-class option includes several skills under one title--Galactic Law Enforcement--though through varying roll or bonus modifiers. Players may choose to generate a new Space Ranger PC from Level 1 or may choose to have their PCs join the Central Space Command (CSC) Space Ranger Academy form their current level or class. When joining, Referees may opt to use the standing Multi-Class optional rules found in the X-plorers basic rules to impose an XP cost.

NOTE: This post is part a series of Space Ranger class posts. It assumes familiarity with the X-plorers science fiction role-playing game rules, which can be found at Brave Halfling.

Class Description
Space Rangers are highly skilled, expertly trained, and well-equipped marshals of justice who operate in outer space and non-terrestrial bodies. They are deputized by the local/ruling space authority to perform a wide range of duties including: law enforcement, investigation, search and reconnaissance, rescue and/or retrieval, a variety of high-risk, tactical missions, and more.

New Skill Matrices for Galactic Law Enforcement
Galactic Law Enforcement (GLE) encompasses several existing skills and adds knowledge on the understanding and interstellar laws, regulations, treaty compliance, local ordinances, and the like of the ruling galactic or planetary authority. Any agencies related to the enforcement of these laws are also included in this knowledge base. GLE covers the following skills (some existing, some new):

Piloting
Survival
Security
NEW: Interrogation - Interviewing subjects to retrieve information, may include intimidation, bluffing, but not torture
NEW: Investigation - Deduction, detection, and search/tracking subjects.

Space Rangers also have full knowledge of the ruling galactic authority's government structure, function, and related protocols (no rolls are needed, the Referee can impart this info during gameplay when appropriate).

Skills Modifiers
If you recall from the X-plorers Player's Guide, modifiers are listed by the minimum number needed to roll in order to succeed at that task. These examples follow that format.

Special Class Ability: Rally Bonus, A.K.A. “The Hail Martian”
The psychological profile of Space Rangers is typically self-determined individuals who would rather work independently or in a pinch give orders, rather than take them. Their tactical training and firmly, unflagging self-confidence, and belief that their appointed task is for the greater good, affords the Rangers an added benefit of personal integrity.

This unwillingness to be dominated or defeated grants Rangers an additional, once-per-game “rally” bonus that can be used to enhance a roll, save, or action for each member in the party. Rally bonuses are capped at level 12. Bonuses may be used for physical actions using the Presence, Physique or Agility (X-plorers) and Charisma, Strength, Constitution, or Dexterity (D&D) abilities. They do not apply for Intelligence or Wisdom rolls.

So it turns out even Apollo astronauts can't escape red tape! This is a supremely cool artifact from the Apollo era space missions--it's the customs form that astronauts Armstrong, Aldrin, and Collins had to complete on their return home from the moon.

This is something I'd LOVE to incorporate into a game, being the inclusion of an at-the-table artifact, plus seeding endless options for role-playing. Is the form filled out correctly? Some bureaucrat is not going to like that and this could mean anything for the PCs:

Delay in travel makes for a stay at a local space hotel or stop at a cantina (1d4 days)
PCs are detained, quarantined, questioned, tortured, mind-melded for information (1d4 days)
PCs are not allowed on-planet and are refused entry to the dock at the spaceport in question
PCs are welcomed for bringing much needed (whatever the cargo is) but then sentiment turns when it's not enough for the populous
Forms get mixed up or are forged by a corrupt official, fingering them for a crime they didn't commit (stolen goods, breaking embargo, etc.)
The form falls into the hands of local merchants who are looking to snuff out competition at the source--with the suppliers
Forms attract all manner of criminal element trying to "rob a train" and the PCs are the protectors of said cargo
Forms are a way of stealing PCs identities, ship registration, and mission info so they can be offed and replaced
Guards are unable to read the forms (either because of smudges, missing data, whatever) and PCs are held and added to a "watch list"
Nothing really, it's just a record of the cargo, but it's held onto and comes back to haunt them later

And so forth....

The Galaxy Needs Space Rangers!
Space Rangers in my Space Pioneers setting function as an arm of the CSC which is working to advance human settlements in space. The CSC (in the current timeframe) is undergoing massive recruitment to fill the shallow ranks of the Ranger Corps. In addition to the usual law enforcement role (protection of the populous and general keeping of the peace), they are having to help with the CSC's cataloging of the galaxy.

It should almost go without saying that this class has more in common with Texas Ranger or Buzz Lightyear types than the similarly named rangers in fantasy RPGs and even airborne rangers in military games. Their missions tend to require a level of administrative and technical skills that make them more akin to an auditor or investigator (a requirement sought of FBI initiates) and a park ranger, in providing knowledge and assistance to settlers who may be in over their heads--and checking up on those who may be up to no good.

Rangers are a Multi-Class Option
Space Rangers are a separate multi-class option for X-plorers, combining characteristics of the Soldier, Technician, and Scout classes, but with a few distinctive touches. Ranger PCs start at level 3 and choose an area of sub-specialization. They are skilled in hand-to-hand combat as well as marksmanship and are trained to rely on raiding tactics and instincts to optimize combat efficiency. In an upcoming post I'll outline the template which includes ideas for available skill tracks, as well as some special abilities.

What Makes them Unique
What differentiates Rangers from Soldiers? Mainly, their M.O. is to see justice prevail, they're not looking to recoup a profit or corporate interests. Many times this mandate can even put them at odds with private sector objectives. This role often requires them to be equal parts spy, detective, and with many skills obviously identical to the X-plorers Soldier. However, Rangers are much more like free-wheeling investigators and independent marshals of the law and less so a straight-up fighting force.

Rangers are a Breed Apart
Due to the varied nature of missions and sparse Ranger population for a given jurisdiction, they're used to working solo or in small groups. While they can operate in a larger force, they typically are assigned to smaller task forces (as the only Ranger) or partnered with someone who complements—rather than mirrors—their own abilities. There is a great need in the galaxy for fresh Ranger recruits to fill these vital roles for securing the galaxy—are you up to the challenge?

GASP! I have awakened from hyperspace slumber!

WHAT YEAR IS IT? Oh, man, it's been TOO long since I've had substantive posts (save for a few random ideas here and there). I'd wanted to post more material this year, and unfortunately (as with all things) real life got in the way. To sum up, we're in the middle of purchasing our first house, which is taking an inordinate amount of time on the sellers' end. It's not their fault, but their bank hasn't been expedient. I've also changed day-jobs and that took another kind of toll on my energy level. The new gig is a big improvement, but it constituted a significant change in my daily schedule, work style, and personal investment.

Finally, I don't really ever get into personal stuff on this blog. Let's face it, as much as we all enjoy this stuff, the intrusion of the real world is inevitable and I'm a private person when it comes to those things. But the short version is a member of my immediate family passed away unexpectedly during this whole job/house transition. When I started blogging a few years ago, it was after the death of my father and I poured myself into something creative. It took another death to reel me back and want to focus more on important things like family and the direction of my career.

But these things are never fixed. They're molten and always changing shape. While nothing yet has cooled for me to say I'm 100% free and clear to start doodling around in my hobbies again--there will never be a time like that. You just have to start and do it when you can--at least that's what I've decided. And frankly, the blogging community--as supportive as it can be--hasn't missed me and that's as it should be. I've got no illusions about my meager spot in the blogoverse, but it is something I'm proud of and enjoy doing. And it's something I've been wanting to return to with renewed investment.

Over the next week or so, I'll be making live some unpublished posts I've dug up--actual creative ideas! I'll hopefully be getting back in the saddle and thinking up new stuff as well catching up on email, etc.. Watch for some new X-plorers material by the end of the year and some other surprises.

If you're still reading this blog, thanks for sticking around, your presence hasn't gone unnoticed. And is that right--nearly 100 followers? Man, I'll have to do something special to commemorate that! :)

John Carter of Mars Trailer #2 is out

Honestly, this looks like a lot of fun to me. Does it hew closely to the source material?

Wait--a better question is--does it hold the spirit of the material in high enough regard?

Possibly.

It's at least obvious now that Stanton is truly is trying to make Barsoom appear as an alien world. (One of the earlier criticsms of the first trailer which looked too much like Utah where it was filmed.) Take the white "ape" it's definitely ape-like, but to make a gorilla with six limbs would be phoning it in, wouldn't it? I think I'm warming to his day-blinded version.

So far, I'm still excited and I hope it turns out well. I guess I'll know at the end credits on March 9 for sure.

New Picture: White Apes of Barsoom!

Entertainment Weekly has a fresh interview with director Andrew Stanton and the latest photos from the John Carter of Mars flick. Then theres this little tidbit from the article [SPOILERS, if you've not read the books], in which Stanton explains that the Tharks chain down Carter to keep him from low-grav jumping his way to freedom in a gladitorial arena. Stanton explains Carter's dilemma, but he leaks a little info about the beast itself (emphasis mine):

AS: There’s a subtle sense of anticipation for what these things might be like. Then Michael Kutsche — who did a lot of the designs on [the Johnny Depp movie] Alice in Wonderland – came up with this design on his own, for just their scale. He made them nocturnal, almost like moles — they stopped using their eyes, and just had a heightened sense of smell. We just love that. We needed a scene where Carter was going have to get out of his execution sentence in order to move the story forward, and we thought what better than having to go up against this formidable creature?

EW: I’m sure John Carter is thinking right now, “This is a really interesting problem.”
AS: [Chuckles.] Right. And you’ve got these apes that can’t see, but they can smell really well. So it gives you a slight chance to not be killed immediately.

It's been a while since I read the books, but I don't recall the apes being blind.

Am I wrong? What do you think about the way this is playing out?

TONIGHT: You can't hide from the Intergalactic Nemesis!

This evening I'll be at the Heights Theater in Minneapolis to see Intergalactic Nemesis, a LIVE radio show-like performance mashed-up with pulp comic imagery. From their website:

The Intergalactic Nemesis is a one-of-a-kind theatrical experience that mashes up radio drama with comic-books. Three actors voice dozens of characters; one Foley artist creates hundreds of sound effects; one keyboardist performs a score of thousands (yes, thousands!) of notes; while on a two-story high screen we project more than 1,250 individual, full-color, hand-drawn, hi-res, blow-your-mind comic book images to tell the story visually. So older versions of D&D have hirelings--hired labor/meatshield minions who are the first line of fodder in any exploration or combat scenario. But what are the sci-fi equivelents? Exiled Jedi Vocational Readjustment (1d20)

I recently found some old notes I had on post-Jedi job opportunities--in other words, what do Jedi do when there's no proper temple or organization for the Order. If you've ever played the 2E version of West End Games' Star Wars RPG, they had a character template for a "failed Jedi". This was ostensibly any Jedi who survived The Purge and went on to choose a new line of work, be it paid or hobo.

So here's a list to get the ball rolling (literally, it's a random table of course!). Keep in mind, that any Jedi in hiding in plain view needs to remain so and if their powers come in to play they need to be able to explain their powers away as "tricks":

This also could just as easily work for any other RPG setting using psionicist, but I especially like the notion of a disbanded society of psionic ronin looking for purpose after The Fall.

An "Exonaut" Class Destroyer!

Looking for a vessel to take to the stars and beyond? You're in luck (as long as you're not picky!) because you can whip one up by hitting the "Build It" button on shapeWright. It's basically a random shape generator that quickly puzzles together a spaceship from pre-made forms.

Here's the "Torquemada" being built. A fuselage appears and a con tower falls into place (must be a command ship!)....

After a few more forms attach, a secondary fuselage appears! Definitely a large crew complement...

How it (seems to) work

The designs themselves are rather blocky, kinda' like a video game. But there's something very satisfying about hitting that button and watching your ship come together! You can even have it brought into meatspace via 3D printer (though the prices are pretty hefty at this point). Luckily, for the rest of us, there's the download button. The viewer is very simple though, and not everything appears centered on the screen. Not satisfied? Hit the button and pop out another one! I had fun putting in celebrity names and characters as well as just mundane words. It's case sensitive, allowing for a different design with caps added or not.

Ideas for use in gaming

In thinking how you could make this useful for gaming purposes, you could probably find a VRML (the download file format) viewer that would let you position the finished piece the way you want and then print out a jpeg. Right now the shapeWright just rotates the model on an axis. You can poke at it, but it doesn't really stay level enough to take a satisfying screen grab.

Once you have your ship, stat that puppy up and start flying! If you loved it enough, you also could order the printed model as a miniature. I think prices need to come down a lot or customization of your own design would need to be implemented for that to become a real consideration though (at least for me--prices start around $40).

One other item to note--when you name your creation it stays in the shapeWright memory. At least it seems to (I tested a few models 3 or more times). Here's a few ships I whipped up this morning (click on them to enlarge and see detail):

I do have one wish, which is that it would let you select some options like a class of ship and then it would slap on the appropriate module (doesn't really matter how or where). So imagine typing in "destroyer" and some heavy guns get attached or "scout" for smaller ones or maybe "recon" for a radar dish.

Anyway, it's a neat internet gadget to mess around with!

A habitable-zone exoplanet discovered in new crop of 50 finds

Let's get something straight--digging up exoplanets can be tedious work--but the pay-off can sometimes be incredible. Using extremely sensitive equipment, astronomers look for a "wobble" in a star's path that might be caused by a planetary body. When the technique was first used to find possible planetary systems, gas giants made up the early finds (Saturn and Jupiter-sized) because they were big and had a lot of mass to indicate planet's orbit.

As the technique has been refined, smaller planets often considered to be rocky like Earth--though there's no definitive proof yet of their composition--are now being picked up. Five such smaller planets have recently been detected--one of them lies in the Goldilocks Zone that would allow for liquid water and possibly life to exist. This exciting news comes from the BBC:

Of the new finds, a total of five planets have masses that are less than five times that of Earth.

"These planets will be among the best targets for future space telescopes to look for signs of life in the planet's atmosphere by looking for chemical signatures such as evidence of oxygen," said Francesco Pepe, from the Geneva Observatory, who contributed to the research.

The star HD 85512 lies some 35 light-years away and hosts a potentially habitable planet. One of the worlds, called HD 85512 b, is estimated to be only 3.6 times the mass of the Earth.

It is located at the edge of the habitable zone - the narrow strip around a star where liquid water can be present on the surface of a planet. Liquid water is considered essential for the existence of life.

NASA snaps detailed flyover photos of moon landing sites

These are some spectacular new photos from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) probe launched by NASA back in June of '09, which is still in service and snapping images of the moon's surface.

The craft has returned pictures showing imprints left behind by astronauts and their equipment on Apollo missions 12, 14, and 17. From NASA:

At the Apollo 17 site, the tracks laid down by the lunar rover are clearly visible, along with the last foot trails left on the moon. The images also show where the astronauts placed some of the scientific instruments that provided the first insight into the moon's environment and interior.

"We can retrace the astronauts' steps with greater clarity to see where they took lunar samples," said Noah Petro, a lunar geologist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., who is a member of the LRO project science team.

All three images show distinct trails left in the moon's thin soil when the astronauts exited the lunar modules and explored on foot. In the Apollo 17 image, the foot trails, including the last path made on the moon by humans, are easily distinguished from the dual tracks left by the lunar rover, which remains parked east of the lander.

While it's exciting to see that the equipment is still there, it's pretty awesome that the actual footpaths are also intact!

Looky what Hubble found:

A giant cosmic necklace glows brightly in this NASA Hubble Space Telescope image.

The object, aptly named the Necklace Nebula, is a recently discovered planetary nebula, the glowing remains of an ordinary, Sun-like star. The nebula consists of a bright ring, measuring 12 trillion miles wide, dotted with dense, bright knots of gas that resemble diamonds in a necklace.

A pair of stars orbiting close together produced the nebula, also called PN G054.2-03.4. About 10,000 years ago one of the aging stars ballooned to the point where it engulfed its companion star. The smaller star continued orbiting inside its larger companion, increasing the giant’s rotation rate.

The bloated companion star spun so fast that a large part of its gaseous envelope expanded into space. Due to centrifugal force, most of the gas escaped along the star’s equator, producing a ring. The embedded bright knots are dense gas clumps in the ring.

The pair is so close, only a few million miles apart, they appear as one bright dot in the center. The stars are furiously whirling around each other, completing an orbit in a little more than a day.

The Necklace Nebula is located 15,000 light-years away in the constellation Sagitta. In this composite image, taken on July 2, Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3 captured the glow of hydrogen (blue), oxygen (green), and nitrogen (red).

Wonder where the other end is. ;)

Custom Star Wars Figures: 1950s Space Opera Style!

Saw these amazing re-imagined character figures over at Sillof's Workshop. You've likely seen some of his other themed, custom Star Wars figures around the net, including the Samurai, Western, and WWII versions. This latest one is called Serial Wars and harkens back to the pulp sci-fi cinema of the Golden Age!

The gang's all here in top form and man are they inspiring. My favorite has to be the psion star warrior fashioned after Ben Kenobi....

Actual Science Fiction in Two New Movies? That's crazy!

This first one features a new take on aliens (at least for movies) as electrostatic entities bent on sucking the planet dry of energy and vaporizing us along the way. It's nice to something actually a little different making it's way to the silver screen. Somebody needs to stat those things up!

This next one is directed by Andrew Niccol, who directed one of my favorite films, Gattaca. This has a similar "marginalized lower class breaks into the uppper class" theme but what's really fascinating is how time is used. It's a sci-fi movie about time--but not about time travel!

I'm always going to love big space operas like Star Wars, alien smashfests like Cowboys vs. Aliens, or dystopian parables like Rise of the Planet of the Apes--but the films featured in these two clips really have my interest piqued.

Hollywood: This is a good start--now make MORE like these!

Star Trek Theme Park coming to Jordan

Set phasers for fun! That’s because Star Trek’s getting the theme park treatment in Aqaba, Jordan. Set to begin construction in March 2012, the Red Sea Astrarium, a $1.5 billion development comprised of four hotels and 17 amusement-park-style attractions, will feature a Star Trek-themed entertainment center, including a “space-flight adventure” simulator ride (a la Disney’s Star Tours) based on the 45-year-old franchise.

Turns out Jordan's own King Abdullah II is a huge trekkie/trekker. So he gets his own country AND a Trek theme park. I bet he could probably build his own Enterprise if he wanted to. And it'd be better than that Star Trek Experience they shuttered in Vegas a few years back.

Twin Cities-based Fantasy Flight Games gets Star Wars License

So after more than a year-and-a-half after Wizards of the Coast dropped the Star Wars property, local game juggernaught Fantasy Flight Games has picked up the license. That's both extremely cool (since that's my little corner of the galaxy we're talkin' about) and a little perplexing.

Say what you will, but to me Wizards offers games in a much more accessible format. They know their audience and their games are easy to learn (Magic the Gathering), easy to run (for the most part), and they know how to package stuff in an appealing manner for all ages--they proved their competency of this long before being acquired by Hasbro.

I've yet to see that from FFG. They put out great games, beautiful boxes, but really expensive. I'm not ready to be a naysayer or even set foot on the "I told you so" path. However, I think Fantasy Flight has a long way to go to convince people that they can reach the key market that a property like Star Wars demands: kids. Many of their games are steeped in high concept themes like Arkham Horror and Descent in board games and others like Dark Heresey and Warhammer in RPGs. Then there's the overlap--to what degree do you begin to eat into your sales of Battlestar Galactica, Star Craft, and Twillight Imperium? Will those games basically be recast with a Star Wars version?

Back to the bigger issue--kid friendly. Yes, I know, FFG puts out a variety of games that reach a broad range of ages, but I'm talking about their reach into those markets. Right now their first few Star Wars themed games (a card game and a board game) start at $39.00. That hardly seems like a step in the right direction, but then these could be offerings that are meant to merely introduce dyed-in-wool FFG fans to their version of Star Wars gaming.

Their target market is, in a lot of ways, very different from Wizards'. WotC makes things accessible to a wider range of players at many different price points and levels of involvement. FFG seems to have laser-like focus on it's older, more dedicated--if not more well-heeled--game hobbyists. (Seriously, those expansions can cost an arm and a leg!) And some of their fans are even de-crying their foray into Star Wars calling it a "kiddo universe" and that it was "great when I was a kid," but are more committed to more adult-oriented properties like H.P. Lovecraft, Game of Thrones, and the like. I honestly hope there's no real teeth to a backlash, but it's clearly not a wise decision to annoy your core fanbase in favor of attracting another market. WoTC has been learning that for the last few years all too well.

But who's to say they aren't moving into more family friendly territory? They recently acquired a wonderful board game called The Adventurers from it's original publisher Alderac Entertainment Group. Adventurers is is very much like a pulpy-Indiana Jones adventure scenario game where you attempt to retrieve artifacts from a booby trapped temple. FFG just published a follow up to the original using the same art style and basic rule structure. But again, the price tag is $49.95, which is of course in line with their regular offerings. While the material could be appealing to teens (likely not younger) the price tag pretty much guarantees it's for adults, and hardcore boardgamers at that. But still, it shows a little more of a shift in tone towards family friendly fare at least.

I guess we'll have to wait and see if an FFG/Lucasfilm partnership will yield a Star Wars system (RPG) that will be embraced by Star Wars fans en masse. For hardcore board game and card game fans, there's huge win potential. But what about for Star Wars fans, young and old?

Rocket Raccoon = My New Hero

Nevermind the fact that I currently don't read this series and couldn't care about the other characters. It has a picture of a ray-gun wielding anthropomorphic raccoon on the front, with rocket ships and some sort of wooden dude in the background.

$3.99? Sold--I can't get my debit card out fast enough.

I vaguely remember reading about Rocket Raccoon in the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe (OHotMU) series from the late 80s. I thought he was a little childish then. I was into Star Wars and Avengers comics, so I couldn't be bothered with "kiddie" comics.

Part of my prejudice may be blamed on Howard the Duck. Not the laudable comic book, but the dismal movie that was relegated to cinematic shovelware as soon as it hit theaters. I'm not gonna lie, I looked at the raccoon and saw a man in a duck costume.

Was I ever wrong. RR is about as pulpy-adventure as it gets. The latest Annihilators issue (pictured above) has a solo adventure that's not to be missed.

"WHO SAYS I DIG THROUGH TRASH?

Rocket's comeback is now in full swing. At San Diego Comic Con, Hasbro revealed that they're giving the lil' guy an action figure--which is like saying "you are now worthy to be duplicated thousands of times and lost in playground sandboxes all over the country". And really, that's something special.

In any case, RR is okay in my book.

"Battleship" board game turned into a movie--with aliens?

WTF? Seriously, this is just weird. Battleship is based on the board game of the same name. No, I'm not making this up. Even better it's about the US Navy battling aliens at sea! While the concept doesn't seem to be anything better than what's usually vomited onto SyFy by Asylum Entertainment, it does have higher production values and (inexplicably) Liam Neeson. Perhaps Stephen Colbert and Jeff Goldblum should have been cast instead? (Skip to 3:20 for relevant bit.) No word on if giant red and white pegs will be depicted.

MTV has a few assumptions based on the trailer:

Speaking of alien weaponry, the ship is capable of unleashing some kind of bubble force field that encompasses an enemy and, so it seems, destroys everything within it. We'll just ignore, for now, how the bubble reminds us of that containment unit in "The Simpsons Movie." Instead, let's concentrate on the alien tech. We're hoping for originality and cool visuals to join forces and deliver us a satisfying early summer movie experience. The bubble, perhaps, is the harbinger of fun, absurd, eye-popping stuff to come.

Comes out May of 2012 which seems like a long time to promote a stinker (or is that sinker)? Then again, I'm all about the alien invasion genre.

New Star Wars Deleted Scenes Trailer

The official Star Wars website has posted a deleted scenes teaser trailer for the upcoming Blu-ray releases of the entire saga. You may recall the deleted scene of Luke building his green lightsaber in Return of the Jedi, that was teased last year, which is included. Feast your eyes on wampas in the rebel base on Hoth and the sandstorm scene from Jedi. But there's also several scenes that took me by surprise--some that I've not even heard of (I won't spoil them here so you can have the pleasure of seeing them yourself!)

One that I'm pleased to see make the cut is my personal favorite, the deleted sequence with Luke on using macro binoculars watching the star destroyer chase and capture the rebel blockade runner above Tatooine. Here's hoping Biggs' scene is there too!

Okay, okay, so I've been on a Barsoom kick lately, who can blame me when the trailer just came out? Speaking of which, I don't recall a trailer having such a short-lived excitement, met by seemingly tepid aftertaste. The blog community is a fickle mistress, no?

In any case, one shouldn't let this trailer, that blog post, or whatever this or that dude says overcome the general awesomeness that is outer-space barbarians. I took the liberty of creating a resource page here on Exonauts--mainly to satisfy my own need to have a central location--but I figured others out there might appreciate a point from which to dive back in to Burrough's Mars mythology.

Sunday Space: A Look Back at NASA

Hope everyone is enjoying their Sunday (it's oppressively hot and humid here in the upper midwest!). Here's a few videos looking back at NASA over the last several decades. The first is film from the 1970s on space colonization. It's fun to see the optimism of what might have been.

This next clip is from a recent CBS News report on a great exhibit on display at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C. NASA Art: 50 Years of Exploration.

If you've ever been, you may recall the incredible murals there illustrating the wonder and excitement of the program in it's heyday. This latest exhibit includes pieces by such artists as Annie Leibovitz, Nam June Paik, Robert Rauschenberg, Norman Rockwell, Andy Warhol, and Jamie Wyeth.

If you can't make it to D.C., there's also a book of the exhibit.

Is that you Tars Tarkas?

Here's a screen-grab from the new John Carter trailer of a thark warrior who just might be our green Barsoomian hero. According to a behind the scenes look that io9 writer Meredith Woerner published earlier this week:

Stanton and team figured out a way to humanize the aliens, thus giving this alien species the ability to emote. As you can see in this little hint of a picture here, the creatures are slender but they're rocking the leather strap costume that is the uniform of Barsoom.

But, as a result of making them a bit lankier, the whole world feels a lot less like something you'd paint on the side of your van, and much more tangible. And even though they have four arms, green skin and giant tusks (on closer inspection I noticed that a few of the Tharks had carved their tusks, etching out interesting patterns barely visible to the eye) the most striking thing about this alien race were their eyes. Stanton had literally overlaid Willem Dafoe's eyes over the flat face of this warrior, and lightened the iris with a striking ice blue. Why blue?

"Because they arrest you," Stanton explained. "We had all these eye colors. Fortunately, Defoe is getting so defined and wrinklely so there is a lot of Defoe in that face so it translates really well."

So the question is, is that Willem Dafoe behind those tusks? I'll tell you what I think, but you go first in the comments...

Early John Carter Animation Attempt

This isn't new to the internet, but given the release of the trailer for the new film, I thought it'd be nice to see again. This particular clip of the old JCoM test by animator Bob Clampett, features footage for a never-realized adaption of the saga. It also includes narration from a gentleman who worked on the project in the 30s. It's fun to think what may have been. Reminds me a lot of the old Max Fleischer Superman cartoons from the same era.

WANT: Wall-sized Touchscreen Star Wars Game!

So this is awesome. What exactly is it? It's a giant touch display where you can play an interactive Star Wars game like you're pretty much in a galaxy far, far away controlling your space armada with simple gestures. Check out the project's website. The YouTube page gives a good overview:

Developed at the Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL) by MS graduate candidate Arthur Nishimoto, "Fleet Commander" explores how a real-time interactive strategy game that would typically rely on complex keyboard commands and mouse interactions be transferred into a multi-user, multi-touch environment.

Originally designed for use with TacTile, a 52-inch multi-touch LCD tabletop display, "Fleet Commander" game play has been ported to EVL's 20-foot wide multi-touch LCD wall, Cyber-Commons.

Very cool to see games reach this level of sophistication. Reminds me of the touch screen D&D project:

John Carter Update: io9 goes behind the scenes with Dir. Andrew Stanton

Concept Art of Barsoom's City of Helium

There'a a really wonderful article on io9 right now detailing a good long look at next year's John Carter film (formerly titled John Carter of Mars--yes, he addresses the title change) directed by Pixar virtuoso Andrew Stanton. I have to say they're doing everything right. Lots of little things to imbue a sense of authenticity, including getting Tars Tarkus voice actor Willem Dafoe to do his lines on stilts in 100 degree desert heat so Taylor Kitsch's Carter can have a real person to interact with (the Tharks will be all CG in the film).

He worked with production designers to create something that he hopes will truly feel like a real place in a real era--and not be derivative of every other movie sci-fi/fantasy land. From io9:

I want to feel like I'm really there. I want to feel like it's really happening." This is not what somebody wished for; this is what really happened. This is the source of the book. Then I realized that's what it is: It's a period film, of a period we just don't know about. It's as if somebody has done their research really, really well and called in all the authorities. I thought that's the way to approach this. I don't want it to seem like this is images of creatures that people have been drawing on their notebooks their whole life and just want to selfishly see realized on the screen; I want you to go, "No, sorry, this is actually how people dressed in Aztec times" or "This is how people bargained in Japanese feudal times." Can we capture that faux authenticity? Breaking that down was making things weathered, aged, having limitations, a sense of deep-seeded culture that you don't really ever get to explore to the depths you'd like to, a sense that much has gone on in the world long before the times that we're present to. Setting the time period on earth to match the books helped.

Sounds like he's really pouring his heart into this one. And really, as a movie lover and lover of Burrough's work, that's all I ask! :)

If you don't know much about the era (I'm certainly no expert!) or just want to feast your eyes on some incredible and long-forgotten artwork from the heyday of space fantasy, have a look.

One Final Mission: Ad Astra

I grew up looking to the heavens and dreaming what it would be like to take a space walk or fly a spaceship to another world. It's safe to say that my formative years were totally dominated by the image and presence of the shuttle orbiter program throughout its triumphs and tragedies.

In grade school I dreamed of one day seeing a shuttle lunch in person and of going to Space Camp in Huntsville Alabama to "train" to become an astronaut. I played Luke Skywalker on my school's playground and in the dirt lot behind our development. I consumed all things space--library books, comics, movies, action figures, trips to the Science Museum of Minnesota, and more, like some sort of 10-year-old science/pop culture junkie.

When I was in junior high school I learned that my grandfather--who had owned an aluminum foundry--had made parts for the first shuttle to enter orbit, Columbia. That filled me with immense pride because not only had he been a part of something truly incredible (where the human race is concerned) but because he came to this country through Ellis Island, met my grandmother, raised a family, and started his own business. In his vocation, he not only provided mechanical parts for the war effort in the 40s, but along with thousands of other Americans, helped NASA sew together the noblest of human endeavors--the scientific pursuit of human spaceflight using reusable spacecraft. He lived the American Dream without ever really trying; he just loved to make things with his hands and he was lucky enough to make a life out of it and provide for his family.

Today, marks the beginning of the final mission of the Space Shuttle Program as the shuttle Atlantis takes her final voyage--THE final voyage for the shuttle program: mission STS-135. While we can debate the cost in both economic terms and human lives, the program brought us closer the deep reaches of space by extending the life of the Hubble Space Telescope and sustained a long-term human presence in orbit through continued support of the International Space Station (among many other missions).

For all her faults, the shuttle has continued to bring unbridled hope to a generation who grew up on copious doses of stargazing whether it was in the back yard on clear night or in front of the VCR on a rainy one. How fitting that the final mission is flown bearing the name of a world that has transcended into legend and continues to inspire us.

I look forward to a new era of space exploration, but I will always remember our space shuttle as the vessel that carried my grandfather's handiwork to the final frontier...and me along with it.

Wishlist: Plastic Sci-Fi Minis

I've been wanting some decent 1:72 scale sci-fi minis for a while now. But alas, they don't exist. At least not in the style that I'm hoping for. See, what I need is something akin to pulp science fiction rendered in a cheaper plastic format like these from Caesar Miniatures:

Hydra Miniatures makes awesome stuff, but again--all metal. I'd buy their entire catalog if I had my druthers.

I just can't seem to find a good cache of pulpy space-opera-y minis out there. And the key here is in PLASTIC. Preferably a box like Caesar, but I'm not choosy. Does anything like this exist? Any sculptors out there want to take a crack at this?

Aliens: Space Strigoi

Consider this FREE and OPEN content for X-plorers or whatever sci-fi game you prefer. ;)

Space strigoi are particularly devious, shapeshifting space vampires that leech lifeforce from other sentient beings. They are phasic in nature and feed off the psionic energy of their victims. They resemble hideous, fluorescent-skinned goblins that can disguise themselves as attractive humans (1d6 rounds), near-humans (1d10 rounds), a variety of small, pet-like animals (1d4 rounds) in order to lure their prey closer. They need a round to rest in native form between adapted forms.

Space strigoi have redundant anatomy--two pulmonary systems, two two metabolic systems, and several neural nodes throughout their body to enhance brain and coordination functions--making them quite difficult to kill. This unique physiology allows them long life of several millennia.

In order to be completely put down they must be disintegrated whole. Dismembering will only trigger regeneration and piss them off.

Psionic Leech
Space strigoi will sap the lifeforce from their prey via psionic attack. They must be within 1 area in order to siphon the life energy of a given target at a rate of 1d4 HP plus 2 PRE per round. Drained victims will become empty husks that will revive in 1d8 rounds and rise as hungry strigoi at half the hit dice of their "parent".

Molecular Rearrangement
Strigoi can reorganize their own bodily mass to shapechange into any creature they have personally touched. Often they choose the guise of an attractive humanoid or a cuddly or wounded pet. Their ability to alter their molecular makeup also allows them to "phase" through solid matter (e.g., a ship's bulkhead), though this takes extreme concentration and can only perform the feat twice per day.

Regeneration is another ability gained by controlling their own matter. They appear ageless even in their native form and may regrow limbs and even a head with brain in 1d12 rounds.

Detect Lifeforce
They have an innate ability to locate sentient beings or creatures of sufficient psionic energy from which to feed. This is automatic and they will likely target those closest or most vulnerable.

Psionic Invisibility

They may make themselves "invisible" to those around them by way of a mental block. For this reason they often do not appear in person except to their immediate victim, but can be captured as a non-identifiable florescent blur by electronic recording devices.

Psionic Grasp
Strigoi can lure their prey through psionic manipulation resembling seduction. Victims will obey the vampire so long as they fail a Presence (PRE) or comparable attribute save with a -1 handicap to their roll.

Goblin Form - Claws & Fangs
In their native form they can bite and scratch with 1d6+1 and 2d4 damage respectively.

Rumors from the Reaches (for GMs)

Space strigoi will try to set up a lair in an uninhabited corner of a spaceship, space station, or other stellar craft. They will often lure victims to the lair and hold them prisoner through Psionic Grasp for later feedings.
Space strigoi who are not completely vaporized should be flushed into space through an airlock to prevent them from regeneration and claiming more lives.
Space strigoi are highly intelligent and have in-depth knowledge of spacecraft mechanics and technology. They will often disable propulsion, communications, and emergency escape systems to prevent a pool of potential victims from escaping.
Space strigoi can enter a hibernation phase and persist for eons in interstellar space until found by unsuspecting travelers.
Space tramps, smugglers, and cowboys are prone to tell tall tales of strigoi encounters, but are also more likely to be superstitious and hang all manner of emblems and graffiti strange written characters on their vessels to ward off the dreaded space vamps.

Local zine Vita.MN did a great article about local musician Jeremy Messersmith's D&D game. They also did a nice de-coding guide for newbies and non-nerds so you can just send it to your significant other without further explanation and they'll instantly speak your lingo/encourage you to attend. Less than 3 Days Left to Help Kickstart Technoir: Expandable, Moody Sci-fi RPG

THIS is cool. "THIS" being Technoir, a "high-tech hard-boiled" science fiction RPG by Twin Cities RPG designer Jeremy Keller. Technoir is on Kickstarter at the moment, and you should go check it out. From the author:

Technoir is an RPG in which you play characters entrenched in the criminal underground of the near-future. These protagonists use illicit skills and high-tech gear to exploit opportunities in the hopes of escaping their desperate lives. It's the shady stories of hardboiled crime novels of yesterday set in the dystopian sci-fi cities of tomorrow.

One of great things about the game is that Keller is planning on rolling out "transmissions" which are like missions/adventures. the game has already surpassed funding goals and as an added bonus to backers on Kickstarter he's offering additional themes to tweak the setting to your taste. Check out the beta version on the Technoir official site.

I'd suggested SpinnerNoir--basically Technoir set in a Syd Mead/Blade Runner setting. Go vote for the suggested settings on his latest Kickstarter post.

Colonies in Space: Inspiration Realistic and Fantastic

Space colonies are the pinnacle of non-terrestrial habitation in space. It's far trickier to build your world than it is to land on with the keys already in the ignition. I'd done a previous post on colonies--even reused a few images (man do I love the orange death star!) but I wanted to focus on a few different ones for this post. I suppose you could separate them into two categories: realistic futurism (that is to say design concepts by artists and engineers for exploratory purposes) and Hollywood's interpretation.

My point with this series hasn't been to be exhaustive--that is to track down every space or moon base in pop culture. Rather, just to share some art that I think is really cool.

Let's start with the realistic (images courtesy of NASA image archives). Many of these show large agricultural parcels to feed their on-board populations, much like the way the pioneers needed to become self-sustaining:

Here's a few concepts designed for TV and film, toys, books, comics, etc. that may or may not have made it the screen. They didn't need to be accurate in order to wow viewers, but a few--like Babylon 5--have gone the extra mile to include solar panels, centrifuges, shuttle bays, hydroponics facilities, etc.

The Valley Forge was technically a ship, but it serves very much as a colony of sorts...

Torus Wheels: Iconic Spinning Space Stations

The Stanford Torus or "wheel" is often regarded as the quintessential design template for orbiting space stations in that it provides microgravity via centrifugal rotation. That is, it spins and people stick to the floor.

While it's been popularized in comic books, science fiction novels, and film, the design has grounding in real-world physics. The concept was developed at Stanford University based on theories rocket engineers Wernher von Braun and Herman Potočnik.

This scene is actually from a centrifuge area on the spaceship Discovery One, but the concept is the same.

NASA took the Torus further by using the design to help the public understand how people might live in space one day. The Torus is perhaps the closest approximation to Earth-like living--that is to say extended or semi-permanent residence--for humans in space.

During the Space Race, the wheel design achieved star status as a pop culture icon of human achievement in the marathon to establish a permanent orbiting settlement.

Help Decide the Best Sci-Fi Books!

On my shelf at the moment....

NPR is hosting a summer readers poll to determine the best sci-fi and fantasy novels--evah. They did a pretty good job outlining the criteria to nominate your favorites. Looks like there will be a vote-off to follow. Here's the rules:

1. Limit yourself to five titles per post. Don't hesitate to nominate a book that someone else has already listed; your entry will count as a vote in favor of that title progressing to the next round.

2. No young-adult or children's titles, please. We plan to devote a poll to YA next summer. (It's also no fun if Harry Potter wins every year.)

3. Horror and paranormal romance are also out, which disqualifies most of Stephen King (also a big winner in previous polls), Charlaine Harris and Stephenie Meyer. Once again, we'll cover horror in a future poll.

4. Feel free to nominate a series — such as Tolkien's Lord of the Rings or Asimov's Foundation — as a single, collective work rather than listing individual books.

5. That said, there are series and series: To qualify as a collective work, the books in a series must be written consistently by the same originating author or authors. For example, you can't nominate the whole Star Wars franchise, though you can nominate individual Star Wars novels.

Go put in for your favorite stories on their site. List 'em here too while you're at it. Feel free to expound on literary greatness in sci-fi, why it's good fodder for games, or maybe there's just "this one part, that was totally cool." Plus, I'm always looking for recommendations!
